How to read the trail

Official starting point of the PR1SJO trail (9.3 km, linear, about 2h30, moderate difficulty), which descends from 691 m down to sea level through the Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a lagoon bordered by a double fajã emblematic of São Jorge, ending at Fajã dos Cubres.

Best for

For hikers in good physical condition who want one of the most beautiful descents in the Azores, from altitude down to the spectacular Caldeira de Santo Cristo lagoon.

When to pass

Rain or strong wind: the trail is on packed earth, slippery after rain, and exposed on some ledge sections. Also avoid without a return transport plan, as the trail does not loop.

When Miguel recommends it

Miguel recommends this trail over Pico da Esperança (PR04SJO) when the goal is the dramatic contrast between altitude and coastline rather than a 360-degree summit panorama: it's a descent, not a loop, so plan a return from Fajã dos Cubres. Miguel also recommends it only on clear-visibility days, since its appeal relies entirely on successive views over the caldeira.

9.3 km, about 2h30 to 3h30 with stops, moderate difficulty, dominant downhill profile (about 700 m of descent). Starts at the Serra do Topo parking area, ends at Fajã dos Cubres: arrange a way back (taxi, pre-positioned vehicle) as the trail does not loop. Can be extended with a stop at Lagoa da Fajã dos Cubres, already listed separately in the catalogue.

PLACE · LANDSCAPE · EXPERIENCE

A trailhead before it is a viewpoint

Serra do Topo is best understood as a starting point. Several routes begin here, most notably PR01 towards Caldeira de Santo Cristo and Fajã dos Cubres. The landscape matters, but the practical question is the walk itself: distance, elevation, ground conditions and return logistics need to be considered together. At Serra do Topo, the highlands become a gateway to São Jorge’s fajãs and some of the island’s most distinctive walking routes.

It should therefore not be merged with PR01 or reduced to a photo stop. Tourism sources do not all publish exactly the same distance for PR01. Some give 9.3 km, while the current Natural Park information gives 9.5 km. That documentary difference is more honest than pretending there is one uncontested figure. The PR02 route associated with Serra do Topo is listed at 5.5 km, around 2 hours 30 minutes and difficult in the tourism information consulted.

For a hike of this kind, weather, available time and realistic alternatives matter more than a fixed recommendation. Sources describe it as demanding; plan the route and return carefully. The route should be treated as a demanding hike requiring preparation.
