A natural pool that needs to be read with the Atlantic

Poça de Simão Dias is not a swimming pool placed beside the ocean. It is a natural basin carved into a rugged volcanic shoreline, surrounded by lava formations and marine cavities. The setting is one of the reasons the place is memorable, but it is also why sea conditions have to be taken seriously.

The pool belongs to the wider Fajã do Ouvidor landscape. Coming only for a quick photograph misses part of the point: the approach, the volcanic rock and the relationship between the pool and the open Atlantic are all part of the experience.

The geology is part of the experience

The dark basaltic shoreline creates shelves, cavities and pools where the sea enters the volcanic rock. The shapes are best appreciated on foot before getting into the water.

Wear footwear suited to uneven volcanic surfaces. Natural pools can have sharp or slippery rock, and conditions change with spray and swell.

When swimming makes sense

Calm conditions are essential. A natural pool can look sheltered while waves are still capable of overtopping its edges.

If the sea is rough, treat the site as a viewpoint rather than a bathing opportunity. Do not climb onto exposed rocks to get a better photograph.

Allow time for the Fajã

Simão Dias works especially well when combined with the wider Fajã do Ouvidor. The drive, the coastal setting and the pool make a more coherent outing than a rushed in-and-out visit.

Keep the itinerary flexible: the same sea conditions that make the pool beautiful can make it unsuitable for swimming.
