Technical reading of the trail
A technical reading of the trail based on Miguel™ Hiking criteria: route, terrain, exposure, relief, effort and decision conditions.
How to read the trail
Official PRC6SJO loop (10.9 km, circular, about 3h, moderate difficulty) starting from the village of Norte Pequeno, descending to the fajãs of Mero, Penedia and Pontas before climbing back on a different path, offering two contrasting settings: highland pastures then a rugged coastline.
Best for
For hikers who want a full loop (no return logistics to arrange) combining highland pastures with isolated coastal fajãs in the north of the island.
When to pass
Bad weather: the descent and climb back to the fajãs run along a wind-exposed trail with little shelter for much of the route.
When Miguel recommends it
Miguel recommends this loop over PR1SJO (Serra do Topo) when you want a full loop without arranging a return, and over Pico da Esperança when the goal is exploring isolated fajãs rather than a single summit viewpoint.
10.9 km, about 3h, moderate-difficulty loop with about 460 m of cumulative elevation gain. Starts and ends near the Junta de Freguesia do Norte Pequeno. Bring water and wind protection, little shade along the route.
PLACE · LANDSCAPE · EXPERIENCE

The Norte Pequeno trail descends towards the sea, becoming steeper in places and passing through vegetation characteristic of São Jorge. The official trail description mentions Azorean heather, Morella faya, pittosporum and other plants associated with the island’s landscape.
