Vinhas da Criação Velha is not simply a vineyard walk. It is part of Pico’s UNESCO-listed Landscape of the Island’s Vineyard Culture, a remarkable example of how generations of farmers adapted viticulture to a volcanic island where wind, salt and thin soils made ordinary farming difficult.
The landscape is organised around small plots enclosed by black basalt walls, known locally as currais. These walls protect vines from the Atlantic while creating a dense geometric pattern across the land. The result is one of the clearest places in the Azores to see how a human landscape can become part of the geology around it.
