After a morning among the vineyards of Criação Velha or around Madalena, the cave shifts the focus from visible cultural landscape to underground geology. Its interest is not simply its length: the cave offers a close look at how a basaltic lava flow formed, cooled and drained. Gruta das Torres is in Criação Velha, in the municipality of Madalena. The tourist visit covers only part of the cave, about 450 metres. The short format can also last up to one hour, including the introduction and equipment.
The visit is underground, but weather conditions can still affect the opening of the centre. This is not a free-form walk through a cave. You enter a dark, humid and uneven environment, following the centre’s instructions and the rhythm of a guided visit.

What the cave reveals
The cave has a total length of about 5,150 metres, with a main tunnel that can reach 15 metres in height. It formed from pahoehoe lava flows emitted in the Cabeço Bravo area about 1,500 years ago. Inside, the shapes are those of cooled volcanism: lava stalactites and stalagmites, side benches, lava balls, striated walls and ropy lava.
The interesting detail is that the visit does not turn the cave into an artificially lit attraction. The Visitors Centre prepares the descent, provides the necessary equipment and gives visitors context before they enter. The tourist route covers only part of the cave: about 450 metres, with an announced duration of roughly one hour. There is no permanent lighting inside, so the cave is revealed gradually through the visitor’s own equipment.

The new visit formats in 2026
The Gruta das Torres visit changed in July 2026 after a period when access to the interior was suspended for safety reasons. The current official Natural Park information lists two formats: an Extended Cave Tour once a day, starting at 10:15, with a maximum of 15 participants; and a Short Tour offered four times in the afternoon, with a maximum of 20 participants and a maximum duration of one hour. Admission follows the official tariff; the short tour is set at 50% of the regular admission price. For travellers, the key point is not to memorise every slot but to check the operating conditions for the day you choose. The Natural Park also notes that the centre may close depending on weather conditions and that, during the initial implementation of the new system, online ticketing is being updated. The long tour starts at 10:15, so it is worth building the day around that fixed point rather than treating the cave as a completely flexible stop.
