A cave shaped by geology and history
Furna do Enxofre lies inside the Caldeira da Graciosa, in a landscape where the island’s volcanic origins remain visible. It is a major lava cave, 194 metres long, with a large central vault, a lake in its deepest area and a fumarolic field. Today’s access is part of the experience: visitors enter from the visitor centre through a tower about 37 metres high and then descend a spiral staircase with 183 steps.
The access structure was built at the beginning of the 20th century and has become part of the identity of the site. The scale of the cave is the first impression. As you descend, the light changes, the vaulted ceiling takes over the space and the volcanic setting becomes much more immediate than it is from a viewpoint.
Deeper inside, the lake and the gas emissions make the geological character of the place tangible. A major volcanic cave at the heart of the Caldeira of Graciosa.

This is an indoor geological visit, but it is not a passive stop: access means going down and back up the staircase. Weather conditions mainly affect comfort around the Caldeira and whether it makes sense to combine the cave with other outdoor discoveries on the same day.
