This is more than a scenic stop. Ash, slopes and recent volcanic landforms make the island’s geological history unusually visible on the ground. The 1957-1958 eruption added about 2.4 km² to Faial. The area is also linked to the Capelinhos Interpretation Centre and to the long Dez Vulcões route.
