Technical reading of the trail
A technical reading of the trail based on Miguel™ Hiking criteria: route, terrain, exposure, relief, effort and decision conditions.
How to read the trail
PR06FAI is Faial’s major volcanic traverse. From Miradouro da Caldeira, the trail skirts the caldera before crossing the Capelo peninsula towards Capelinhos and Costado da Nau, linking several major volcanic geosites.
Best for
Experienced hikers who want to cross Faial’s major volcanic landscapes from the Caldeira to Capelinhos.
When to pass
Poor visibility, strong wind or unstable weather at altitude. The route starts at roughly 800–900 m and is highly dependent on mountain conditions.
When Miguel recommends it
Miguel recommends the Dez Vulcões traverse only when visibility and weather are stable enough to enjoy the full crossing. Otherwise, the Caldeira and Capelinhos are better treated as separate visits.
19.3 km, around 5 hours, linear and difficult. Carry water, rain and wind protection, proper hiking footwear, and arrange the return from Capelinhos in advance.
