Pico Island Vineyard Culture UNESCO Landscape

A landscape of vineyards, basalt and stone walls shaped over centuries on Pico Island.

Pico’s vineyard landscape is more than rows of vines. The currais, small plots protected by basalt walls, form an agricultural system designed to shelter vines from wind and sea spray. The result is especially legible around Criação Velha and the island’s western coast.
