The bay was once the main harbour of the parish and former municipality of São Sebastião. Its present name comes from the abundance of willows around the site. The old harbour role helps explain why the place feels more like a small working coastal settlement than a purpose-built resort.

Access to the sea is by steps, and there is a small pebble beach together with a semi-natural pool fed by seawater. Beside the solarium is a grassy area with picnic tables, while the larger picnic facilities, toilets and changing facilities are across the road. The bathing area is also recognised as an accessible beach, with an amphibious chair available by reservation through the local parish council.
