Refugo is not a big resort beach, and that is part of its appeal. The bathing area sits in Porto Judeu, on a coast shaped by lava flows that reached the sea. Today the old fishing setting has been adapted for swimming, with a semi-natural pool, direct access to the ocean and a small set of facilities. It works best as a local stop rather than as a destination that needs half a day on its own.

The pool is built into a very volcanic landscape: dark basalt, open sea and a compact bathing area. The regional bathing-water profile describes the sea-facing section as open water over basalt slabs, with intermediate marine exposure. In other words, the pool can feel sheltered without turning the Atlantic outside it into a swimming pool. The site also has a small sports area, toilets and a bar, while access to the pool and open sea is by steps.

Refugo is officially watched during the 15 June–30 September bathing season. Outside that period, there is no equivalent lifeguard presence to rely on. The water profile gives an average bathing-water temperature of about 21°C, while Visit Portugal lists roughly 22°C as a summer average.
