A volcanic crater turned natural swimming arena
Seen from the coast, the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo looks almost too neat to be natural. The near-circular lagoon inside the volcanic crater is the feature everyone comes for, but the shape of the islet explains the experience: the outer Atlantic is exposed, while the crater creates a sheltered space inside.
The islet is a protected natural reserve, so visiting it is not the same as arriving at an ordinary beach. Access is regulated, numbers can be limited and sea conditions matter. The boat crossing is part of the experience rather than just a transfer.
What the visit is really like
