Lagoa do Fogo
A volcanic lake inside a protected nature reserve, reached either from viewpoints or on foot via an official trail.
Lagoa do Fogo lies inside the collapse caldera of the Água de Pau volcanic massif. The present caldera formed around 15,000 years ago and is the youngest and smallest of São Miguel’s major calderas. Today the lake and its steep slopes, covered with protected vegetation, form one of the island’s most striking natural landscapes.

How to read the trail
The most photographed lake in the Azores also deserves to be walked. Official trail PRC02SMI (Praia – Lagoa do Fogo, 10.2 km, about 4h, circular, medium difficulty) descends from the heights down to the pumice-stone beach by the water, crossing dense endemic vegetation within the nature reserve protected since 1974. Most visitors settle for the roadside viewpoints; those who descend on the trail experience something radically different, slower and wilder.

For fit hikers who want a real immersion in a protected nature reserve, beyond the roadside viewpoint.
When to pass
Fear of heights on narrow ledge sections, insufficient fitness for a 4h walk, or dense fog forecast (the trail runs along steep drops).
When Miguel recommends it
Miguel recommends this hike rather than sticking to the roadside viewpoints on clear-sky or high-cloud days; in fog or uncertain weather at altitude, he points instead to Lagoa das Furnas or Serra Devassa, which keep their appeal even without much visibility.
Trail logistics
Allow about 4h for the full loop (10.2 km), hiking shoes recommended (terrain sometimes slippery), an early morning start is advised to avoid the fog that often sets in by late morning. Loop trail, returning to the starting point.

From the road, the classic view can be almost effortless. The walk down to the lake is a completely different experience: you leave the viewpoints behind, descend through vegetation and volcanic terrain, and eventually reach the shoreline. That difference is worth understanding before choosing how to visit. The official trail is around 10.6 km and takes roughly four hours, with a moderate rating. Good footwear and a waterproof layer are more useful here than an urban outfit, particularly after rain.
