Volcanic formations inside the cave
Striated walls, side benches, overlapping passages, gas bubbles and lava formations on the ceiling and floor reveal different stages of the tunnel’s formation.
Beneath Ponta Delgada, Gruta do Carvão takes you inside São Miguel’s volcanic story, only a short distance from the city.
Gruta do Carvão is the largest known cave system on São Miguel. The system is divided into several sections, including the Paim section, the Secadores de Tabaco section, the João do Rego section and the José Bensaúde section. The Paim section is the one currently set up for visitors.

PLACE · LANDSCAPE · EXPERIENCE
The Azores Geopark currently records 1,912 metres of known length. Older records suggest that the system once extended much farther. For visitors, the useful point is simpler: this is a real fossil lava flow beneath part of Ponta Delgada, not a conventional limestone cave. The interest of Gruta do Carvão lies in the traces left by flowing and cooling lava. Striated walls, side benches, overlapping passages, gas bubbles and lava formations on the ceiling and floor reveal different stages of the tunnel’s formation.
The visitor centre and guide provide the geological context needed to read these shapes. Instead of simply seeing a dark passage, you can understand how a basaltic lava flow behaved as it cooled and solidified. The short tour lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and covers roughly 200 metres. The long tour lasts about 2 to 3 hours and covers about 1 kilometre, by reservation. Advance booking is required for the long tour and is recommended more generally when you want to secure a place on a specific time slot.
Comfortable clothing and suitable footwear are recommended because the floor is uneven and the access includes stairs. The underground experience does not depend on panoramic visibility, so it can become relevant when outdoor viewpoints are less rewarding.

CONDITIONS
The location is practical: Gruta do Carvão is in Ponta Delgada. It can therefore fit naturally into a city day, or provide a contrasting stop alongside São Miguel’s open-air volcanic landscapes. More importantly, it changes the scale of the story. Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas show volcanism as landscape; Gruta do Carvão lets you enter the material left by an ancient lava flow. For travellers interested in understanding the island rather than collecting viewpoints, that contrast is valuable.
