How the spot works

Right in the centre of Praia da Vitória, this vast sandy beach is Terceira's busiest surf spot. It's an accessible beach break, sheltered inside the bay, that works on a northeast-to-east swell and suits both beginners and intermediate surfers. Its popularity also makes it the island's liveliest spot: worth anticipating crowds in the water and on the beach, especially in summer.

PLACE · LANDSCAPE · EXPERIENCE

A useful stop on Terceira

Praia Grande occupies the broad bay of Praia da Vitória and stretches for more than half a kilometre of sand on Terceira’s east coast. Its setting is closely connected with the town, making the beach part of an urban and coastal experience rather than an isolated seaside stop.

The beach is directly linked to the town centre, seafront promenade and marina. The bay is more sheltered than some of the island’s exposed coastal sectors, although bathing conditions remain seasonal and should be assessed locally on the day.

Its strength is its simplicity: a substantial sandy beach, an accessible waterfront and the services of the town immediately around it. It fits particularly well into a day that combines time by the sea with a visit to Praia da Vitória itself.
