Valley and hillside landscape
For the town itself, two to three hours is enough for a relaxed visit including the waterfront, viewpoints and a cultural stop if it is open.
The historic town at the heart of São Miguel’s first settlement, set between seven green hills and the Atlantic.
Povoação is not one of São Miguel’s headline postcard stops, and that is part of its appeal. The town sits in a deep, green coastal setting surrounded by seven hills, with the Atlantic directly below. Its importance is historical: official regional tourism sources identify Povoação as the place where the island’s first settlement began. Once you know that, the town reads differently. The streets, church, port and surrounding slopes become part of a much older story.

Its importance is historical: official regional tourism sources identify Povoação as the place where the island’s first settlement began. The parish’s history identifies Povoação Velha as the place where the first settlers landed, while the present town developed as the area was progressively occupied. Regional tourism and local historical sources identify the area of Povoação Velha as the place where the first settlers established themselves on the island. It occupies a restored nineteenth-century hydraulic grain mill and explains the importance of wheat production to Povoação. Yes if you are interested in local history and everyday life.
It can be an excellent base for the east and southeast, especially around Furnas and Ribeira Quente. It is less convenient if you plan to make frequent day trips to the western side of the island.

CHOOSING YOUR VISIT
The town is surrounded by a series of green ridges or “lombas” that frame the settlement. Viewpoints such as Lomba do Cavaleiro and Pico Longo make this geography much easier to understand.
Povoação is also a strategic eastern base. Furnas is close enough to combine with it, while Ribeira Quente and the southern coast offer another direction. The trade-off is distance: if your plan is to spend the same day exploring western São Miguel, Povoação is not the most efficient base. It works much better when your itinerary concentrates on the east and southeast.
