Pelames is the kind of place that looks simple until you arrive. The pools and shoreline are shaped by volcanic rock, and the Atlantic remains an active part of the setting. Tide, swell and weather can change how comfortable the place feels within a short period.
It is therefore better understood as a flexible swimming stop than as a beach with a fixed programme. On a good day, it is an easy way to spend some time by the sea; on a rough day, the same rocks and waves are a reminder that the Azores are an Atlantic archipelago first.
