PLACE · LANDSCAPE · EXPERIENCE

A volcano, a fortress and Angra’s views

Monte Brasil is a volcanic landform closely connected to the history of Angra do Heroísmo. It is at once a natural area, a viewpoint over the city and bay, and a military landscape shaped by the Fortaleza de São João Baptista. The Azores Tourism Portal describes it as an ancient volcanic complex integrated into the UNESCO World Heritage area of Angra.

The official PRC04TER trail lets you read the site while walking: fortifications, the Santo António chapel, Pico do Facho, vegetation, former military installations and the Pico das Cruzinhas viewpoint form a circuit around the volcano. The trail is 7.5 km and takes about 2h30, with medium difficulty. What you will really discover: a place where nature and history are inseparable.

Monte Brasil is not an isolated hike; it starts almost directly from Angra. Its strength is the combination of walking, heritage, woodland and Atlantic views. An ancient coastal volcano above Angra do Heroísmo, combining fortifications, forest, viewpoints and an official walking trail.
