Gorreana – Historic Tea Plantation
At Gorreana, tea is not just something to taste. It is part of the north coast landscape of São Miguel, between rows of Camellia sinensis, the factory and the old harvesting paths.
Gorreana lies on the north coast of São Miguel, in the Maia area. Here the tea plantations are part of the landscape itself: rows of tea plants run across the slopes alongside pasture and woodland before the terrain falls back towards the factory.

Technical reading of the trail
A technical reading of the trail based on Miguel™ Hiking criteria: route, terrain, exposure, relief, effort and decision conditions.
How to read the trail
PRC28SMI is a short circular route starting at the Gorreana tea factory, operating since 1883 and the oldest tea plantation in Europe still in production. The trail crosses the tea rows on the hills of northern São Miguel, with views towards the ocean.
Best for
All levels looking for a short, easy walk through São Miguel’s historic tea-growing landscape.
When to pass
If you are looking for a long or physically demanding hike: this route remains short and accessible.
When Miguel recommends it
Miguel recommends this walk in light rain or unsettled weather. Unlike higher routes such as Pico da Vara or Serra Devassa, it stays short and at low altitude, with the factory providing a natural shelter and the option of a tea visit.
3.3 km, around 1h30, easy circular route. Start and finish at the tea factory car park.

A working agricultural landscape
The Azores tourism portal records its foundation that year by Ermelinda Gago da Câmara and her son José Honorato. It also currently describes around 32 hectares of plantations producing black and green tea. Tea as a seasonal landscape The appearance of the plantation changes with light, humidity and the agricultural cycle. For travellers interested in agriculture, local products or landscapes shaped by human activity, that living quality is part of the experience.
Here the tea plantations are part of the landscape itself: rows of tea plants run across the slopes alongside pasture and woodland before the terrain falls back towards the factory. The official Chá Gorreana - PRC28SMI walking route starts near the factory parking area. It climbs through the tea fields, passes through Japanese cedar woodland and pasture, then descends on a narrow track once used by workers during the harvest.
The north coast can be intensely green or wrapped in mist, while a short clearing can completely change the view across the tea fields. For others, a short factory visit may be enough and leave more time for another part of the island. PRC28SMI is an official 3.3 km easy loop, currently listed at around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Field and factory together
The relationship between field and factory is the key.
Three quick questions When did Gorreana start producing tea? The factory was founded in 1883 and has operated since then. Can you walk through the tea plantations? Yes. How much time should you allow? About 90 minutes for the full trail, plus whatever time you want for the factory and tasting. A shorter visit is possible if the rest of your day is already full.
CHOOSING YOUR VISIT
What the factory adds to the visit
The factory completes the landscape story. The Azores tourism portal notes the different stages of tea production, original nineteenth-century Marshall machinery and the opportunity to taste different teas.
The relationship between field and factory is the key. The plantation explains where the crop belongs in the landscape; the factory shows what happens after harvesting. Together they give the visit much more depth than a quick tasting alone.
You can also visit without doing the full loop. On a busy day, the factory and its surroundings can be a short stop. With enough time and suitable conditions, the PRC28SMI adds the walking experience that makes the geography of the plantation easier to understand.

Miguel™: a flexible stop rather than an automatic one
Gorreana can change value depending on the rest of the day. In stable weather, the trail gives you time among the plantations and views across the north coast. In less settled conditions, the factory remains a useful shorter experience. Miguel™ therefore does not treat Gorreana as an automatic tick on a list. It can be compared with the other options available on São Miguel, the time you actually have and the conditions at that moment. The aim is to build a coherent day, not simply to collect places.
