The official Lagoa das Furnas trail listing includes the calderas area as one of the points along the route. The water is rich in iron and its brown-orange colour can mark light fabrics. A recent PDF gives 9.5 km; the small documentary difference does not change the nature of the route. That is what gives Furnas its particular atmosphere, sometimes dramatic and sometimes surprisingly quiet. The garden, botanical collections, water features and historic elements make it a destination in its own right. If you walk it, allow a real half-day, or more if you also want time in Terra Nostra.

Terra Nostra: a garden before it is a thermal bath
Parque Terra Nostra deserves to be seen as a botanical garden in its own right. The garden traces its history back to Thomas Hickling's arrival in Furnas in 1782 and has evolved over generations. Today it covers 12.5 hectares of botanical collections and landscaped areas, including camellias, ferns, remarkable trees, water features and historic architectural elements. The large iron-rich thermal pool is its best-known feature, but it does not define the whole visit.

The thermal pool and what makes it different
The Terra Nostra pool has its characteristic brown-orange colour because of its iron-rich water. The experience is not simply that of a heated swimming pool: the contrast between warm water, outdoor air and dense vegetation is part of the appeal. The park currently states that admission includes the garden's points of interest as well as the thermal pool and jacuzzis. Its currently published opening hours are 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, with closure on December 25. These details should still be checked before visiting, especially because the garden may close for safety reasons in adverse weather. Furnas is mostly about choosing your pace This area is rarely at its best when Terra Nostra is treated as a box to tick. Garden, thermal water, calderas, lake and lunch can make a very good day, but only if your time and priorities fit together.
