A fumarole field, not just a backdrop
Furnas do Enxofre shows a different side of Terceira. Here volcanic activity reaches the surface: steam escapes from the ground, hydrothermal processes alter the rocks, and sulphur deposits add yellow and pale tones to the landscape. The site is recognised as a geosite of the Azores Geopark and forms part of the island’s protected natural heritage.
The interest is therefore more than visual. Within a short visit, you can observe manifestations of a volcanic system that is still active. Pastures and native vegetation spread across the central plateau around the warmer ground, creating a landscape where geology and everyday Terceira coexist. Here Terceira’s volcanism is not only a landscape story: it reaches the surface through heat, vapour and mineral deposits on the central plateau.
Algar do Carvão takes you into an ancient volcanic conduit; Furnas do Enxofre shows geothermal activity at the surface.
