Why Cinco Ribeiras stands out
Cinco Ribeiras combines an easy coastal stop with a surprisingly rich underwater setting. Above the water, there are natural pools, a small natural pool for younger swimmers and a broad volcanic shoreline. Below it, a lava-tube cave system makes the site one of Terceira’s better-known diving locations.

The old harbour and the volcanic coast
The bathing area was created around the former Porto das Cinco. The access was improved with a ramp and later a larger solarium built over the rocks. The result is a place that still reads as a small harbour rather than a conventional beach resort, with the volcanic cliff and the Serra de Santa Bárbara shaping the backdrop.

Swimming, snorkelling and diving are not quite the same experience
The official bathing area is made up of several seawater-fed natural pools and has support facilities. For snorkelling, the sheltered, shallow setting can be rewarding. Diving is where the site becomes more specialised: the official dive profile gives an average depth of 12 m and a maximum of 16 m, with weak currents. The cave section itself is intended for experienced divers.

What you can see underwater
The protected area includes a submerged lava tube with linked galleries, rounded-stone bottoms and sandy clearings. Documented marine life includes stingrays, salema porgies, moray eels, nudibranchs, narwhal shrimp, forkbeards and red cardinal fish. That does not mean every species will appear on every visit — the sea is not an aquarium — but it explains why the site has a reputation among divers.

When to go
For a simple swim, go when the sea is calm enough for comfortable entry. For diving or photography, local sea conditions matter even more. The live coastal conditions and local information are more useful than judging the place from a sunny photograph taken on a different day.
